About NW Documentary: Our Team

Current Contributors

Julie Gliniany
Production

Julie is a woman of many talents. Singing, dancing and organization come naturally to her, and NW Documentary is grateful for the incredible assistance she has provided since joining us in 2006. She has been a critical part of post-production of ELOQUENT NUDE and preparing us for premieres and film fests. Plus, Julie has a gift of being able to speak in song, which puts a smile on all our faces!

Jennifer Smith
Outreach Coordinator

Jen has been a mainstay of NW Documentary since winter of 2003. She heads up efforts of public relations, writing, and participating in events. She is a graduate of the Winter 2005 Workshop. Originally from the Mid-West, we're sure glad she found us because we now claim her as a true Northwesterner.

Carson Mischel
Grants/Production

Shortly after Carson moved to Portland with her sister from Forth Worth, Texas, she looked us up, and we're sure glad she did. Since Summer of 2005, she's pitched in on grant writing and helping out the production crew. She is a graduate of the Fall 2005 Workshop.

Jason Edwards
Audio Engineer

Though he hates meetings, offices, and anything resembling an organized organization, Jason Edwards has been a steadfast supporter and contributor to NW Documentary. Leaving a high paying job in commercial post-production, he has recorded countless audio for our humble projects, including Sun Gu Ja, Gardner's Garage, and others.

George Kawamoto
Production

George is a regular at NW Documentary and thank goodness for that. With skills in DVD authoring, graphic design, and various other multi-media knowledge, he repeatedly proves himself invaluable, and, above all, good humored. It's too bad George is one-of-a-kind; we could use about four more. George is a graduate of the Spring 2004 Workshop.

Morgan Salman
Webmaster

Morgan's a man of many talents, not only a top rate web developer, but also vagabonding beat poet. Taking his inspiration from predecessors of The Road (Woody Guthrie, John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac), he championed the subculture of wayfaring and wanderlust into the 21st century with his web portal digihitch.com.

Wasn't long after we crossed paths with this traveler that he generously offered to host our website and take on the essential but too often overlooked duties of webmaster.

We last caught up with Morgan in Tucson, Arizona, where he pitched in just like old times. We're proud to call Morgan an original NW Documentary member.

Past Contributors

Winter 2005

Sahoko Kakutani
Internship Coordinator, Production

Sahoko was one of the original volunteers, helping paint and set up NW Documentary headquarters in Summer 2003 with Heather, Jill, Morgan, Jason...ah innocent days of hope and potential. In 2004-05 she helped accept resumes and line up new volunteers and interns to make the next generation of NW Documentary contributors.

Penny Duff
Grants and Research

Penny found us shortly after she moved to Portland and that was just right for us. Though most volunteers would have ditched the myriad small tasks we dish Penny, she returned each week for more. A girl who loves good grammar and orderly organization, she helped write proposals, grants, and whatever else we could drum up.

Heidi Sanburg
Production

Heidi joined us from George Fox University to help us in all areas production, from proposals, to shoots, to DVD projects, as well as helping team up with web-master Morgan to develop some sophisticated behind-the-scenes content management solutions.

Summer 2004

Erik Hilden
Art Department

Erik led our Art Department, supervising our graphic internship positions, developing new graphic materials, and playing the lead role in the design and pre-press of our quarterly newsletter. In addition, he worked closely with the Production Department on such projects as the DVD authoring of Sun Gu Ja.

Laura Johnson
Writing Support

A lovely and talented Canadian, Laura contributes her sharp writing and fine sense of humor to the team. She has been an integral help in grant writing and is a graduate of the Fall 2003 Workshop.

Alyson Miller
Educational Programs

Alyson, an east coast transplant, joined us in 2004 to help pilot the Project Youth Doc, a collaboration with the Oregon Film and Video Foundation.

Spring 2004

Heather Harlow
Co-Founder

Heather was with NW Documentary at its very origin, helping draft the mission statement, fill out endless IRS forms, and make the first professional partnerships. Serving as Co-Director, Heather helped plan and orchestrate several major events. As co-instructor, she helped establish and teach the first three "Exploring Documentary Production" workshops. Giving NW Documentary a year of time and talent, she helped establish the personality and panache of the organization.

Jill Reese
Production

Jill served as Associate Producer for Sun Gu Ja: A Century of Korean Pioneers, helped with a short documentary for Habitat for Humanity, "The Gardener's Garage.

Malia Smith
Graphic Design

We grabbed Malia from the Art Institute of Portland as soon as we saw her portfolio. Wow. She is a talented photographer, with an eye for the rich textures and patterns. A recent series focused her lens on the organic beauty of rust. After spending an semester internship in the Art Department designing the DVD cover of Sun Gu Ja, she returned to NW Documentary to co-instruct the Snapshot Adventure.

Miranda Muller
Graphic Design

Miranda is an artist first and foremost, and a reluctant computer graphic designer. Yet she cheerfully jumped into the work at NW Documentary, helping revision images for the newsletter. She also completed her internship with a series of stunningly beautiful wood-cuts. She earned her B.A. degree in Art/Integrated Media from Pacific University in 2004.

Winter 2003

Jennifer Jacobs
Web Support

Jennifer, or jjj, as she signs off on each email, jumped in for a few months with a helping hand to ease the technical jumps and jumbles as our website expands. We last heard a panicked S.O.S. email as her day job as a computer whiz kid at Intel submerged her. We hope she'll rejoin us when she resurfaces.

Yael Abel
Writing Support

Eloquent Yael helped research and write grants. She works as a stacks librarian by day and an award-winning fictional writer by night.

Brad Stenger
Grants and New Technologies

Brad is one of those soft spoken smart guys with a few tricks up his sleeve. A computer whiz, he helped NW Documentary research grants.

Summer 2003

Andrew Schmidt
Production Support

Andy takes his own path. At Marylhurst University, he majored in Interdisiplinary Studies were he composed his Senior Project, "Life in three Parts." He was (and still makes cameo appearances as) a regular at NW Documentary, bringing good cheer and enthusiasm for projects, whether helping transcribe, edit, or offer moral support, Andy is an all-round good fellow to have on hand.

Diana Welch
Production Support

Diana said she was lucky to cross paths with us, but we say the same. Devoting her life to travel and photography, Diana certainly knows the value of observing, preserving, and celebrating diverse cultures and pasts. She has been a boon to the photographic, archive, and research side of Production, learning the ropes, so that she can soon produce her own documentary about her father, a WWII naval vet, and the German U-Boat sailor he rescued and then befriended.

Marta Juchniewesc
International Relations

Marta joined us from faraway Poland. A self-starter, she wrote her own job position and applied for her own Visa to come from half-way across the globe just to help us. With such an adventurous spirit, open enthusiasm, and all around daredowell that she demonstrated, how could we say no?

Heather Hawkins
Multimedia

When Heather first sent us her portfolio, we nearly tipped off our chairs. We'd rarely seen such talent in graphic design—an eye for color and simplicity and an ever so sly humor. Rarely had we seen it in professional graphic designers and never in a college sophomore.

Quickly, we offered her an internship. We said: You have the job; you're our top choice. She said: I'll get back to you; I'm considering various offers. It was clear others had glimpsed her potential, too. Fortunately for us, we talked her into devoting a semester internship to NW Documentary where Heather built our entire website from scratch. She also designed print and promotional materials such as cards, brochures, and banners.

Beg as we did to keep her, the semester ended and she skipped off to la belle France. We at NW Documentary wish her bon voyage and hope that she fulfills her dream to smash French wine with her bare feet.
